Dreading the snow? Here are 7 essentials that will get you through the cold snap

Storm Emma is heading to the UK with impending doom. The ‘beast from the East’ has already caused plummeting temperatures and patches of snow across the country, Storm Emma is about to hit us with another dose of widespread disruption.

Predicted temperatures of -5°c and a forecast for snow are extremely rare on our little island, meaning we’re pretty inexperienced when it comes to coping with this kind of thing. Luckily for you Brits here’s a list of the top 7 things you need to make the most of your upcoming snow days:

7. Heated slippers

It doesn’t have to be the middle of a cold snap for you to appreciate having warm feet, but it does make the idea of heated slippers really fantastic.

You can get USB powered, plug-in slippers to heat your feet but they’re a little bit on the pricey side, plus you can’t move more than a meter before getting stuck. On the bright side, Amazon sells microwavable slippers, just like the teddy bears you used to have as a kid, and they are GREAT.

6. A tea tray

Sitting in the house can get extremely boring, even if you’ve got your heated slippers to keep your little piggies warm.

There’s a rather high chance that if it snows, most shops will be closed, and most sledges will have been bought out by the parents of eager children. The best household item to use as a sledge is always going to be a tea tray – the flat rectangle is ideal for zooming down the local park hills, and you can take full advantage of the snow.

It looks like rubber dinghies are good fun too.

5. Whipped cream and marshmallows

On the way home from making the most of the snow make sure to stop at whatever store is open and pick yourself up some whipped cream and marshmallows. A scrumptious hot chocolate topped with extra sweet treats is just what you’ll need to warm up after a day of trudging around in the snow.

If you don’t have any hot chocolate, make sure to pick that up too!

 4. Milk and bread

According to the entire population of the country, you might want to pick up some milk and bread too. Somehow on every snow day, both of these items sell out completely. The reason is a mystery since nobody wants to live on just milk and bread, but you never know when you’ll run out.

3. A puffer jacket

These big bulky jackets are really in right now, and to add to how good you’ll look while it’s snowing, you’ll be nice and toasty too. The bigger the better, too – everybody knows layering up is important when it snows, and the bigger the jacket, the more comfy jumpers you can get underneath. These masterpieces from London Fashion Week would definitely keep you cosy:

2. A Doncho

Once you’re back in the comfort of your own home, you want to cosy up and get warm again. A Slanket used to suffice on cold days like the ones we’re expecting, but the Doncho is on a whole other level. And if you’ve got a spare duvet lying around you could even make your own!

1. A puppy

Our nation is dog-obsessed. There are viral videos of pets all over the internet and a new wave of videos of puppies in the snow is about to hit. So why not grab yourself a canine companion and head out to make some memories in the snow.

Okay, so they’re not all essentials, but they certainly will give you the best experience of the snow that we’re expecting over the next few days.

In all seriousness, though, do wrap up warm and stay safe during the cold snap.
